Sheila Horton, Counsellor & Hypnotherapist

Withersfield RoseHill Therapy

I am a fully qualified Counsellor & Hypnotherapist, working in the village of Withersfield, Suffolk and surrounding area.  I hold a Diploma in Psychotherapeutic Counselling (Prof. Dip Psy C) and a Certificate in Hypnotherapy and Counselling Skills (Cert Hyp CS) and I am a member of the National Counselling and Hypnotherapy Societies.

I have worked in the field of education and pastoral care for over 30 years.  Having gone through personal challenges I know how hard life can sometimes be and how important it is to have someone to confide in.  As a parent and a foster carer I have learnt that empathy is essential in any relationship, and I bring that empathy to my therapy.

“Sheila was an incredible help to me. I’ve had multiple counsellors in the past and I had my most eye-opening and impactful sessions with Sheila, bar none. Her kindness, understanding and patience got me through some very difficult times and I couldn’t recommend her more highly”.  KC 2021

"I was looking for relief from anxiety, stress and pain when Sheila offered me Hypnotherapy. I found her voice extremely soothing and calming which helped me get into a relaxed state as we started from the top of my head going down to the tips of my toes.

I felt very safe in Sheila's hands and she talked me through the whole process beforehand so I knew what was going to happen and she would bring me to very gently and made sure I was ok afterwards.

Sheila is one of the kindest, compassionate women I've met and I highly recommend Sheila's expertise as a Hypnotherapy. I hope you benefit from it as much as I did" CO. 2021

Girl Sleeping

Insomnia & other sleeping conditions

Flying Plane

When we are unable to sleep we become exhausted, lack motivation and become more susceptible to stress.  If poor sleep continues both our mental and physical health suffers.  Hypnotherapy can help us identify the causes behind our troubled sleep and help break the cycle, providing you with technique to get your much needed rest.

Dealing with grief can be one of the most traumatic and personal experiences we suffer.  It may be the loss of a loved one, but it can also encompass the loss of a job, home, security as well as the breakdown of a relationship.  Dealing with grief can be a very lonely journey, but by working together we can work together to build on your inner strength and resilience for the future.

Whether you have a phobia of spiders, needles, flying, dentists or driving, hypnotherapy can help you overcome these fears, reducing the anxiety and allowing you to take back control.

Everything You Need to Know

What is Hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is a type of complementary medicine in which hypnosis is used to create a state of focused attention and increased suggestibility during which positive suggestions and guided imagery are used to help individuals deal with a variety of concerns and issues.

Is hypnosis Dangerous?

You will not do anything you do not want to do when hypnotised.
Depending on the reasons for seeking hypnotherapy, hypnosis can for some be upsetting and confrontational due to the issues they are exploring but we will have always agreed a signal to show you are no longer wishing to continue.
Because of the focus called upon during some hypnotherapy sessions some people may feel tired and experience headaches after their sessions.
Hypnosis is not suitable for people who have been diagnosed with schizophrenia, bipolar or other chronic mental health conditions due to hypnosis being able to trigger and worsen symptoms.

What happens in a hypnotherapy session

You will usually initially have a phone consultation with me to discuss what you hope to achieve and agree what methods I will use.

In your first session:

  • We will discuss details about you to ensure I fully understand you and why you are seeking hypnotherapy and agree what methods I will be using in the session.

  • I will lead you into a comfortably relaxed state

  • I will use your agreed methods to help you towards your goals – for example, suggesting that you don't want to carry out a certain habit

  • I will gradually bring you out of the trance

You're fully in control when under hypnosis and don't have to take on the

therapist's suggestions if you don't want to.

If necessary, you can bring yourself out of the hypnotic state.

therapist's suggestions if you don't want to.

If necessary, you can bring yourself out of the hypnotic state.

Can I be hypnotised?

Some people are more susceptible than others to hypnosis - these people are generally the ones who are more open and willing to allowing themselves to relax and enter hypnosis.

It is obvious that those who think they may be unable to be hypnotised imagining hypnosis to be a state that is abnormal and unusual can be prevented from relaxing and allowing hypnosis to happen. Apart from this there are other factors that could lead someone to both think and believe that they were unable to be hypnotised.

Nervousness can create difficulties - It is imperative that as the client you are relaxed and feel comfortable with me. In a therapeutic situation, if you as the client are nervous and fearful you can unconsciously block the process and resist the relaxation techniques. If a client doesn’t like something about their hypnotist, their appearance, their voice, their gender or even the setting they find themselves in this could prevent relaxation from happening. I will never be offended if after our initial phone consultation or even after one or two sessions you wish to chance to another therapist. You need to find the right person for you.

Clients who arrive for hypnosis worrying that the ‘therapy may not work’ they will unconsciously resist hypnosis. Their main focus, being upon it ‘not working’ or it being a ‘waste of money’ will render them unable to relax and follow instructions.

How does hypnosis work?

Through relaxation (similar to meditation) your brain waves will slow down enabling you to access your subconscious. Here, with help and guidance from me, forgotten information can be uncovered or positive suggestions can be added so when faced with an issue in the future you can react differently and generally understand and cope better.

Is hypnotherapy suitable for everyone?

If you have psychosis or certain types of personality disorder or chronic depression hypnotherapy is not advisable as it could make your condition worse.

What does it feel like to be hypnotised?

The way people typically describe the feeling of being hypnotized, during hypnotherapy, is to be in a calm, physically, and mentally relaxed state, in which they are able to focus deeply on what they are thinking about. They usually feel open-minded, and willing to think about and experience life differently, often in a more detached way than usual.
That said, there is no right way to feel when undergoing hypnosis.

Everything You Need to Know

Can I get stuck in hypnosis?

No. This has never happened in the entire history of hypnosis. Even if the hypnotherapist just disappeared, you would simply emerge from hypnosis feeling absolutely fine.

Will I lose control?

No. You will be fully in control and will not explore anything you do not want to. Although it can be emotional to uncover some memories and thoughts from your subconscious.

Is everything I say confidential?

Everything remains completely confidential as long as you pose no risk to yourself or to others. In these rare cases your agreed contact will be notified of my concern or the relevant authorities.

Everything You Need to Know

How many sessions will I need?

The number of sessions required will vary depending on the issue being treated and on the individual. The number of sessions suggested is only ever my recommendation and you are not obliged to have the number I suggest. All I ask is that you only book appointments you are going to attend. (See cancellation policy)

How long does a session last?

The length of a session will vary. Generally speaking the first session will last between 60 – 90 minutes with subsequent appointments being either 60 or 30 minutes depending on the type of induction preferred and the desired outcome of the session.

What if I have to cancel my appointment?

I require 48 hours notice for appointments to be cancelled with no charge.
If appointments are cancelled after this a fee of £20 for 30 minute appointments or £30 is required to cover room hire costs.
